Channa Doce

Doce! A Goan Sweet made of chana dal, coconut & sugar, prepared at Christmas, weddings and special occasions. At my home whenever we crave for this yummy treat is a special occasion, as the ingredients are always readily available in my pantry.

Ingredients :

1 1/4 cups channa dal

2 cups water 2 1/2 cups sugar 3 1/2 desiccated coconut

3/4 cup water 2/3 tablespoon butter

1 tsp powdered cardamoms

Preparation :

Soak dal overnight. Wash and boil dal in 2 cups of water until it softens. In a large wok mix the desiccated coconut, sugar and channa dal well. Keep on a slow fire and keep stirring continuously with a spatula or wooden spoon. After approx 20 minutes add butter and cardamom. Continue stirring till the mixture starts leaving the sides of the pan and forms a ball. Spread some butter on the kitchen counter or cutting board roll the mixture out while still hot.
